ABOUT US:

The Mississippi Trapshooting Association (MTA) is a nonprofit corporation organized under the laws of Mississippi.  The purposes of the MTA include, but are not limited to:  promoting the sport of trapshooting; the safe use of firearms; sponsoring trap shooting events and tournaments in Mississippi; promote trapshooting to our youth; provide pleasure and recreation to its members; in Mississippi MTA is the sole affiliate with the Amateur Trapshooting Association (ATA) and its youth shooting arm, AIM.  MTA is the sole association of Mississippi trap shooters.

MTA, its officers and board of directors, serves in a support role to the affiliated clubs who offer trapshooting opportunities to members and citizens at large.  MTA encourages and supports efforts of Mississippi gun clubs in the development of skills, coordination of mind and muscle, facilitation of proficiency in the safe and appropriate use of shotguns, and the teaching of sportsmanship to its members and guests

WHO WE ARE:

MTA’s membership consists of any Mississippi resident who is a member in good standing of the ATA and who shoots targets registered through ATA in Mississippi. MTA is the sole statewide association of residents of Mississippi who shoot targets registered by ATA.

MTA began supporting and recognizing the State Trap Championships in 1914.  The State Shoot has been conducted annually since then, with only a slight interruption for World War II.

The Present

When compared to surrounding states, and states where ATA Trapshooting is conducted, Mississippi is relatively small in population.  However, when Registered/recreational trap shooters per capita is compared, Mississippi ranks quite favorably. While participation was larger than today, historically formal competitive shooting has not been enjoyed the large participation in Mississippi as football, baseball and golf.

At present there are nine (9)  ATA Registered Clubs in Mississippi which have at least one (1) field capable of throwing and recording ATA Registered Targets.  Of those, only two (2), Capitol Gun Club and Coast Rifle and Pistol Club, which offer regularly scheduled ATA events. The other clubs offer shooting events at random times based on conditions and local needs.

The Future
The future of trapshooting rests with the youth of our state. That’s why MTA had begun efforts to promote AIM  youth trapshooing activities through local organizations like the 4-H Clubs.  The Mississippi AIM Coordinator is actively trying to affiliate with the Mississippi Department an Wildlife who are beginning to formulate plans for a youth shooting program, but at present does not include ATA Trap.
